Story by
Kathryn Retzler

[June 2008] AFTER A PARTICULARILY snowy, and difficult winter (and the winter of 2007-08 especially qualifies as arduous), the first signs of spring in the San Juans bring a sigh of welcome relief. And the first glimmer of summer brings unbridled joy—for a cold wet winter means roaring waterfalls and lush fields of wildflowers. Once the trails are cleared, allowing high country access, everyone who can hike, bike, walk, jeep, or straddle an ATV is headed up into the mountains.  Preferably with camera in hand.

This summer, there should be plenty to photograph. Due to a record snow pack this past wnter, high mountain trails were just starting to open up by mid-June. Consequently, starting later and lasting longer into the season,  thundering waterfalls now fill the air with curtains of crystal-clear, sparkling drops. Colorful carpets of  columbine, paintbrush, lupine, daisys and other mountain wildflowers bloom across the high country. Snow will linger on mountain tops, making a pristine contrast to that deep blue sky. Critters that slept through the long winter will be out enjoying the beauty, the flowers, the water.,. just like you.
